editTips and Tricks
Below are 10 tips and tricks on how to write rich action.
-
Keep things in your novel moving at a fast pace.
-
Keep the tension up and/or the suspense building even in scenes without fights.
-
Fights should advance the plot; don't add fights just to have action.
-
Let characters' actions reveal their nature and/or intent.
-
Ensure that each fight is unique - don't use the same fight or type of fight over and over.
-
Don't describe fights blow-by-blow; let the reader's imagination take over.
-
Incorporate the environment/scenery into the action.
-
Take notes from action movies.
-
Leave chapters at a suspenseful point - don't give your reader a "safe point" to put down your book.
-
Use sentence structure to relay the speed of the action: long sentences to draw out a battle, short sentences to give the feel of quick movement.
